His descendants carried out major works, notably drainage, and by the end of the Second Empire the cru had reached its current size (39 ha) and ranked among the most renowned in Saint-\u00c9milion. Its Pomerol-type terroir, with gravel and ancient sands over clay, explains its original grape mix, dominated by Cabernet Franc and complemented by Merlot. President Ducasse\u2019s descendants remained at the head of the cru until it was bought in 1998 by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Albert Fr\u00e8re, who appointed Pierre Lurton as Managing Director and, in 2011, gave the ch\u00e2teau a new winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc.
