Having taken over the cru in 1922, he restored its prestige by modernising it (notably by building the famous \u201cgrand chai\u201d), work which culminated in 1973 in the revision of the 1855 classification and Mouton\u2019s elevation to the rank of 1<sup>er<\/sup> \u00a0cru class\u00e9. Baron Philippe also played an important role in the history of wine, as one of the first to practise ch\u00e2teau bottling, from 1926, and by having his labels illustrated by artists. From 1988, his daughter Philippine, who died in 2014, continued his work. Her son, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, succeeded her. An 84-hectare vineyard, mostly on a ridge of very deep gravel known as the \u201cPlateau de Mouton\u201d, and a brand-new vat room completed in 2013. Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of Ch\u00e2teau Mouton Rothschild. Made mainly from the youngest vines on the estate, it is produced with the same standards of cultivation, vinification and ageing as the grand vin. It is aged in barrels using traditional methods, expressing the elegance and richness of a great Pauillac.<br \/>\nThe first vintage, 1993, bore the name \u201cSecond Vin de Mouton Rothschild\u201d. From 1994, it took the name \u201cPetit Mouton\u201d, in reference to Baroness Philippine de Rothschild\u2019s residence at the heart of the estate.
