The name Cos, meaning \u201chill of pebbles\u201d in old Gascon, perfectly reflects this situation. The central part of the vineyard lies on a plateau of deep gravel, from which two slopes descend, one facing east and the other south, on soils of gravel and clay. The whole is also crossed by a vein of clay that runs across the estate in a long diagonal. Located in the commune of Saint-Est\u00e8phe, in the north of the M\u00e9doc, Cos d\u2019Estournel enjoys a terroir that is exceptional for its diversity. The wines are its perfect expression, creating the unique style of this Second Cru Class\u00e9. Today, the 100 hectares of Cos d\u2019Estournel form a mosaic of a multitude of plots. Two-thirds planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, they are complemented by Merlot and, in a small proportion, by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. With an average age of 45 years, the Cos d\u2019Estournel vineyard includes some very old vines, many of them between 80 and 100 years old, which represent an unparalleled opportunity for the estate. These old vines bring depth and structure to the wine and reflect the complexity of the soil from which they draw their deepest elements. The gravity-fed winery thus allows the berries, then the juice, to be handled with the greatest gentleness, without excess, preserving the integrity of the fruit.
