Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Medium garnet colored, the 2014 Château Cheval Blanc is still looking very youthful and wearing a bit of puppy fat, sporting gregarious red and black cherries notes with hints of oolong tea, wilted roses and dusty soil. Medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the lively fruit, it finishes on a lingering perfumed note.”
Cheval Blanc became an independent estate in 1832, when the President of the Libourne Court, Jean-Jacques Ducasse, bought it and had the present château built. His descendants carried out major works, notably drainage, and by the end of the Second Empire the cru had reached its current size (39 ha) and ranked among the most renowned in Saint-Émilion. Its Pomerol-type terroir, with gravel and ancient sands over clay, explains its original grape mix, dominated by Cabernet Franc and complemented by Merlot. President Ducasse’s descendants remained at the head of the cru until it was bought in 1998 by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Albert Frère, who appointed Pierre Lurton as Managing Director and, in 2011, gave the château a new winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc. The cru chose to withdraw from the latest Saint-Émilion classification (2022), of which it had been part since its creation in 1955, as a 1ergrand cru classé A.
