Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2022 Canon has turned out brilliantly in bottle. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet raspberries, wild berries and cherries mingled with hints of violets, pencil shavings, black truffle and rose petals, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a dense, enveloping core of fruit underpinned by a chassis of sweet, suave tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This is one of the most muscular, broad-shouldered vintages of Canon in recent years, but it retains every bit of its limestone-driven identity. As I wrote two years ago, this is an estate that is delivering its greatest run of vintages since the superb Post War series that preceded the frosts of 1956, and the 2022 is indeed reminiscent of a modern day version of one of those great years.”
Nestled on the heights of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, Château Canon enjoys a remarkable location at the heart of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Today, Château Canon belongs to the House of Chanel, which has made significant investments to restore the estate to its full stature and nobility. The estate has thus undergone a profound restructuring. More than half of the vineyard was uprooted and then replanted after several years of resting the soil, to restore an optimal balance. At the same time, part of the neighbouring vineyard of Château Curé-Bon was incorporated into the estate, strengthening its coherence. The Château Canon vineyard now covers around 34 hectares planted on the clay-limestone soils characteristic of the Saint-Émilion plateau. The vines, with an average age of around thirty years, benefit fully from this terroir, which combines mineral power and natural freshness. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, which accounts for around 62% of the vineyard, complemented by 38% Cabernet Franc. Classified Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the official Saint-Émilion classification, Château Canon stands out for its velvety, refined style. The wines offer a harmonious texture, delicate tannins and an elegance that lingers long on the palate. With remarkable ageing potential that can extend over several decades, they are among the most refined expressions of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau.
