Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2014

Critics’ scores and tasting notes

Robert Parker Wine AdvocateRP 93

“The 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has an expressive bouquet with lively blackberry, cedar, flint and graphite aromas that are not powerful, yet display admirable precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the Merlot content lending this Pauillac its trademark fleshiness and roundness, yet there is clearly structure here (not always a trait of this Pauillac growth). It will develop more complexity and personality with bottle age, but at the moment you can sit back and just admire the cohesion and superb length. Winemaker Nicolas Glumineau has overseen a quite wonderful Pichon-Lalande, one with inbuilt longevity.”

The Estate

For a century and a half, the vineyard remained intact. It was divided in 1850 on the death of Baron Joseph, his three daughters receiving 3/5 of the estate and his two sons 2/5. One of the daughters, Virginie de Pichon Longueville, the future Comtesse de Lalande, gave her name to the château. A passionate woman and wine lover, she left a profound mark on the history of the estate. Her work was rewarded in 1855 when the estate was raised to the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé. In 1925, Louis and Édouard Miailhe acquired the property. May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, Édouard’s daughter, inherited it in 1978. She restored to the château the spirit of the Comtesse de Lalande, sharing her love of the land and of wine. In three centuries, only two families have built the renown of the château and its wines. In 2007, the estate joined the Champagne house Louis Roederer, run by the Rouzaud family, which has given it new impetus. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande shines on Bordeaux’s Left Bank and extends over a terroir of great singularity. The vines grow on gravel ridges typical of the Médoc, over clay-sand subsoils. This soil, combining gravel and clay, shapes the personality of the estate’s wines. Over the vintages, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has established itself as one of the great signatures of Pauillac. Its wines stand out for their balance between power and elegance, their refined texture and their aromatic depth. Ripe black fruit, spices and notes of cedar and graphite make up a complex bouquet that fully reveals itself over time.
