“Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2006 Mouton-Rothschild was really the wine that put winemaker Philippe Dhalluin on the map, in the sense that unlike the 2005 born in a great vintage, this 2006 had to transcend it. It remains one of the standouts of the growing season and actually replicates previous showings just the week earlier and in January. As expected, the nose has quite brilliant delineation with blackberry, graphite, here an almost cold slate-like scent. The palate is harmonious with the carefully judged acidity, fine-grain tannin and immense detail on the finish. Recent bottles suggest that it may close up for several years, in which case, either enjoy this in the next few months or cellar this for a few years and receive vinous dividends down the line. A neighbour of Lafite but owned by another branch of the Rothschild family (acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel), Mouton is closely linked to the personality of Baron Philippe. Having taken over the cru in 1922, he restored its prestige by modernising it (notably by building the famous “grand chai”), work which culminated in 1973 in the revision of the 1855 classification and Mouton’s elevation to the rank of 1er cru classé. Baron Philippe also played an important role in the history of wine, as one of the first to practise château-bottling, from 1926, and by commissioning artists to illustrate his labels. From 1988, his daughter Philippine, who died in 2014, continued his work. She was succeeded by her son, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild. An 84-hectare vineyard located mainly on a ridge of very deep gravel known as the “Plateau de Mouton”, and a brand-new vat room completed in 2013.
