Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Sweet cherries and berries with some walnuts and dried flowers, as well as notes of crushed stone, pine, currants and violets. Full-bodied and building gradually on the palate, with intense, polished tannins that are layered throughout the wine, providing well-toned muscle. The finish lasts for minutes. Quintessential Calon. Needs time to soften. Try after 2027.”
Located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Calon Ségur is one of the historic estates of the Médoc. The village of Calon owes its name to a small boat once used to carry timber from one bank of the Gironde to the other. In the 18th century, the estate belonged to Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur, whose attachment to the property inspired the famous heart that now appears on the label. The production area covers 45 hectares within the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on thick gravel soils. The grape varieties are the four classic varieties of the Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon (the majority), Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. On tasting, the wines of Calon Ségur stand out for their aromatic intensity and structure. The bouquet evokes notes of leather, black fruit and undergrowth. On the palate, the wine is full and dense, supported by a tight tannic structure and fine depth, characteristic of the great Saint-Estèphe wines made for ageing.
