Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A deep and layered young red with blackberry, black olive and white pepper character with a full body and savory fruit. White pepper and other spices. Depth with elegance. Extremely well crafted. A blend of 45% cabernet franc, 40% merlot and 15% cabernet sauvignon.”
Stephan von Neipperg today manages Château Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as the family’s Bordeaux estates acquired since 1971. The particular nature of the soils at Château Canon La Gaffelière plays an essential role. These clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, which are very free-draining, are particularly receptive to heat. Because of the nature of the soils, the grape varieties also show an unusual make-up for a Right Bank cru, defined by a perfect balance between Merlot and Cabernet. On this terroir, where the grapes ripen early, the Cabernets flourish and bring aromatic complexity to the richness of the Merlots.
