Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2019 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has turned out beautifully in bottle. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries, raspberries, violets, rose petals and forest floor, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with a lively core of fruit, bright acids and fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, precise, saline finish. It displays all the structural refinement and vibrancy of flavor that this sector of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau is capable of.”
Near the church of Saint-Martin de Mazerat, Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse occupies an ancient site on the Saint-Émilion plateau. Vines are recorded there as early as the 15th century. This 6.80-hectare estate was long linked to the Duffau-Lagarrosse family, who passed on their expertise there for nearly 170 years. The vineyard lies on a limestone slope whose subsoil contains a network of quarries. This relief and this rock form the foundation of the cru’s personality. The underground galleries are also used for ageing, extending the link between the architecture of the site and the making of the wine. In 2021, the Courtin family acquired the estate and began a new chapter alongside Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, oenologist and representative of the ninth generation of the family. With Prisca Courtin, she is careful to preserve the estate’s identity while pursuing the changes needed for its future. Continuity of transmission remains at the heart of this project. The wines of Beauséjour seek an expression in which substance comes with finesse and freshness. Their balance rests on a deep structure, without heaviness, and on an ability to evolve over many years. This combination of restraint and persistence is inseparable from the limestone slope where they are born.
