Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Château Cheval Blanc reveals lovely cassis, warm black cherries and redcurrant jelly notions with underlying hints of cedar chest, garrigue, Indian spices and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, it possesses wonderful energy and freshness on the palate with a beautifully poised ethereal nature and long mineral-tinged finish. This elegantly crafted beauty should enter its drinking window in a couple of years and cellar gracefully for another 20+ years.”
Cheval Blanc became an independent estate in 1832, when the President of the Libourne Court, Jean-Jacques Ducasse, bought it and had the present château built. His descendants carried out major works, notably drainage, and by the end of the Second Empire the cru had reached its current size (39 ha) and ranked among the most renowned in Saint-Émilion. Its Pomerol-type terroir, with gravel and ancient sands over clay, explains its original grape mix, dominated by Cabernet Franc and complemented by Merlot. President Ducasse’s descendants remained at the head of the cru until it was bought in 1998 by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Albert Frère, who appointed Pierre Lurton as Managing Director and, in 2011, gave the château a new winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc. The cru chose to withdraw from the latest Saint-Émilion classification (2022), of which it had been part since its creation in 1955, as a 1ergrand cru classé A.
