Critics’ scores and tasting notes

Robert Parker Wine AdvocateRP 100

“From bottle, the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, just as it was from cask. Bursting with aromas of cherries and mulberries mingled with notions of violets, rose petal and anise, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep and enveloping core of vibrant fruit, ripe tannins and a long, expansive finish. It's a blend of 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawing on fully 46 of the blocks that make up Cheval Blanc, and it attained 13.8% alcohol.”

The Estate

Cheval Blanc became an independent estate in 1832, when the President of the Libourne Court, Jean-Jacques Ducasse, bought it and had the present château built. His descendants carried out major works, notably drainage, and by the end of the Second Empire the cru had reached its current size (39 ha) and ranked among the most renowned in Saint-Émilion. Its Pomerol-type terroir, with gravel and ancient sands over clay, explains its original grape mix, dominated by Cabernet Franc and complemented by Merlot. President Ducasse’s descendants remained at the head of the cru until it was bought in 1998 by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Albert Frère, who appointed Pierre Lurton as Managing Director and, in 2011, gave the château a new winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc. The cru chose to withdraw from the latest Saint-Émilion classification (2022), of which it had been part since its creation in 1955, as a 1ergrand cru classé A.
