Critics’ scores and tasting notes

James Sucklingjamessuckling.comJS 93-94

“A tightly layered and structured red with blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Quite chunky and extracted, but it will come around nicely with all the fruit and phenolics. Wait and see. 94% merlot and 6% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes.”

The Estate

The first harvest at Château Fombrauge took place in 1599. Located near Bordeaux, the estate is part of the history of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion. In 1999, Bernard Magrez bought the estate and made major investments to restructure the vineyard and the cellars, to improve its hospitality and reception facilities and to restore the chartreuse and its gardens. In 2012, Château Fombrauge was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the classification of Saint-Émilion wines. The vineyard covers 59.96 hectares. It is planted with 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. The soils are clay-limestone, with Agenais and Fronsadais molasse. The planting density is 6,000 vines per hectare and the average age of the vines is 25 years. The estate has the largest vineyard among the Grands Crus Classés of the appellation. Its diversity of terroirs makes its blocks of plots complementary and brings complexity to the wines. Mildew is monitored by capturing and counting spores, and inputs are adjusted plot by plot using mapping. Vineyard practices respect the environment and biodiversity. Ageing takes place 75% in barrels, a third of them new, and 25% in various vessels such as stoneware, concrete and stainless steel. Château Fombrauge stands out for its deep ruby colour with violet glints, an aromatic palette dominated by ripe fruit accompanied by notes of spices and flowers, and a full, generous palate with silky tannins.
