Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste reveals a classic, refined bouquet of cassis, dark berries, cedar and lead pencil, with discreet floral nuances. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and precise, it’s built around a well-defined core of fruit framed by finely grained, youthful, filigreed tannins with a tensile profile. Less demonstrative than some of its peers in Pauillac, it privileges balance and typicity over sheer power, concluding with a long, elegant and mineral finish. Produced from a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, this is the first vintage vinified in the estate’s new gravity-fed cellar, enabling more precise parcel selection—an evolution that appears to reinforce the wine’s precision and coherence.”
The name Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste refers to its location on a ridge (“Puy”) at the top of the Pauillac heights, and to the Lacoste family, who owned it at the time of the 1855 classification. The history of the estate began in the 16th century and continued through the Saint-Légier, Saint-Guirons and Lacoste families. In 1930, Raymond Dupin became its owner before passing the estate on to the Borie family. Since 1978, François-Xavier Borie and his children have ensured the continuity of the estate, present on the property every day. The vineyard extends over approximately 90 hectares in a single block, 63 hectares of which are planted with vines, on a terroir whose plot layout has remained unchanged since the 1855 classification. Two wines are produced: Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Lacoste-Borie. At the heart of the estate, the wooded park plays a structuring role, promoting the natural balance of the vineyard and biodiversity. The estate has been HVE (High Environmental Value) certified since 2019 and follows agroecological practices. The vineyard lies on a gravel terroir, with vines over 40 years old on average, planted at a density of approximately 9,000 vines per hectare. The estate has benefited from regular investment, including the renovation of the historic cellar and the construction of technical facilities. A gravity-fed vat room came into service for the 2025 vintage. Partly underground, it allows the wine to be moved by gravity and offers greater plot-by-plot precision thanks to vats sized to match the plots. Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste thus follows an approach combining historical continuity, technical precision and a faithful expression of its terroir.
