Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A youthfully reticent bouquet of licorice, pencil lead, spices and dark berries prefaces the 2022 Haut-Bailly, a medium to full-bodied, layered and structured wine with a concentrated core of lively fruit framed by youthfully firm tannins. Concluding with a long, energetic and pencil lead-inflected finish, the 2022 has gained in elegance and integration during élevage, yet it will require time to fully mellow and realize its full potential.”
Created in 1630 by a Parisian financier, Firmin Le Bailly, this cru at the gates of Bordeaux rose to fame in the 19th century under the impetus of Alcide Bellot des Minières. Its prestige was strengthened from 1955 by the Sanders family, then by the American banker Robert G. Wilmers. His son Chris Wilmers took over the governance in 2017, still with Véronique Sanders at the helm. The vineyard, devoted entirely to red varieties, covers 30 ha in a single block. A new winery, designed by Daniel Romeo, was completed in 2021.
