Critics’ scores and tasting notes

“A beautiful fruit to this delicate and refined wine. The tannins are perfectly integrated into the wine and almost give it a pinot texture. The finest silk. It’s medium-bodied with precise and focused fruit and an endless finish. The exceptional harmony of this young wine makes you want to drink it. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. 13.3% alcohol. pH 3.67.”

The Estate

Since the 17th century, Château Haut-Bailly has been part of a long line of committed owners, from Firmin Le Bailly to the Wilmers family, by way of Alcide Bellot des Minières and three generations of the Sanders family, all devoted to enhancing the terroir. In 1955, Daniel Sanders became the owner and initiated a new phase of development for the estate. With his son Jean, he restructured the vineyard, stepped up selection in the vineyard and put in place an organisation that allowed the cru gradually to regain its level of quality and its recognition on the markets. In 1998, Robert G. Wilmers acquired Château Haut-Bailly and supported its entry into the 21st century with significant investments. Since his death in 2017, his family has continued this momentum in the same spirit of continuity. The vineyard lies on one of the highest ridges on the left bank of the Garonne, benefiting from effective natural drainage. The soils, composed of sand mixed with clayey gravel, lie on a subsoil rich in faluns, providing minerals and complexity. The diversity of the plots allows for adaptation to the different grape varieties. Some old vines, which can be over a century old, contribute to the uniqueness of the estate. Fermentation takes place in vats sized to match the lots, with precise temperature control. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with a proportion of new oak adjusted according to the vintage. Château Haut-Bailly produces wines recognised for their precision, balance and ageing potential, expressing the diversity and richness of their terroir.
