Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Dense, rich and chocolaty, with a medium body and ripe, chewy tannins. Generous and well built. Compact finish.”
The origins of Château Monbousquet date back to the 16th century. The estate developed over the generations, experiencing many changes of ownership before achieving significant recognition in the 19th century. At that time, the vineyard was expanded and restructured, allowing the cru to establish itself among the leading names of Saint-Émilion. During the 20th century, the estate went through more contrasting periods before being revived after the Second World War. The vineyard was rebuilt, gradually allowing the estate to regain its potential. A decisive milestone came in 1993 with the arrival of Chantal and Gérard Perse. The entire vineyard was redesigned, restructured and drained, while the technical facilities were modernised. These investments marked a major turning point in the quality of the wines produced. The vineyard lies on a terroir composed mainly of gravel, complemented by sandy-clay areas. This diversity allows good ripening of the grape varieties and a balanced expression of the wine. The main grape variety is Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting before vinification. The wines of this estate are characterised by their richness, complexity and aromatic intensity, carried by notes of ripe fruit and a harmonious structure.
