Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2018 Pavie is a blend of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has a 3.58 pH and 14.48% alcohol. Very deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts from the glass with a fabulously expressive nose of crème de cassis, baked plums and blueberry preserves, leading to an impressive array of nuances, featuring notions of dark chocolate, camphor, licorice, rose petals and fertile loam, plus hints of crushed rocks and iron ore. The rich, full-bodied palate offers layer upon layer of opulent black and blue fruits with loads of exotic spice sparks and pretty floral and mineral accents, supported by firm, super plush tannins and remarkable tension, finishing with epic length and depth. This could only be Pavie. It makes for a seductively stylish glass now, but patience will be rewarded if it is afforded 5-7 years in bottle, at least, then drink it over the next 30+ years.”
The origins of Château Pavie are very ancient. Vines were already grown on the slopes of what is now the property as early as the 4th century. Located on one of the most remarkable terroirs of Saint-Émilion, the estate has established itself over time as a leading benchmark of the appellation. Owned by Chantal and Gérard Perse since March 1998, Château Pavie is now classified Premier Grand Cru Classé A, in recognition of the exceptional quality of its vineyard and the singularity of its wines. Under the leadership of Gérard Perse, who ran the property from 1998 until his death in 2025, the estate underwent a profound transformation. The Château Pavie vineyard covers 37 hectares in a single block on the south-east side of the Saint-Émilion hill. It is laid out on three distinct levels rising up the slope, illustrating the great diversity of the estate’s terroirs. The plateau, at an altitude of around 85 metres, lies on clay-limestone soil above the famous starfish limestone (calcaire à astéries). The mid-slope, at around 55 metres, consists of fine-textured brown clay-limestone soil. The foot of the slope has sandy or sandy-clay soils with iron pan (crasse de fer) between 60 and 80 centimetres deep, as well as sandy-gravel soils. Particular attention is paid to work in the vineyard. Some of the plots have undergone a replanting programme. Planted mainly with Merlot, which accounts for around 60% of the vines, the vineyard is completed by the Cabernets, which bring structure and complexity. The wines of Château Pavie are renowned for their structure and elegance. Their style is marked by great concentration and an aromatic richness of very ripe black fruit, sometimes kirsch-like, joined by intense notes of toast and liquorice. With remarkable power and great depth, they also have exceptional ageing potential.
