Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Extremely perfumed and pretty for the vintage with rose petal, currant, berry and hints of citrus. Medium to full body, firm tannins and refreshing acidity. Flavorful and bright. Drink in 2018.”
Château Rauzan-Ségla is one of the most emblematic historic estates of the Médoc. The history of the estate dates back to 1661, when Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan put together a vast wine estate in the heart of the Médoc. Originally, the vineyard formed a single whole comprising the land that would later become Rauzan-Ségla and Rauzan-Gassies. In 1994, the Wertheimer family, owners of the House of Chanel, acquired the château and embarked on a vast investment programme to reveal the full potential of the vineyard. With this impetus, the estate achieved a remarkable rise in quality. The Château Rauzan-Ségla vineyard now covers about seventy hectares in the heart of the Margaux appellation. The vines, with an average age of around thirty-eight years, are rooted in fine, deep gravel soils mixed with clay. The grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, accompanied by Merlot, Petit Verdot and a touch of Cabernet Franc. This combination of grape varieties gives the wines a balanced structure and great aromatic richness. The wines of Rauzan-Ségla stand out for their style of great purity. Never massive or heavy, they unfold with elegance and length. Their tannic texture is characterised by remarkable silkiness, supported by a bright acidity that gives the wine precision and freshness. The aromas often evoke small red fruits and liquorice, before evolving over time towards notes of cedar and tobacco, drawing the classic portrait of a great Margaux.
