Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Excellent depth on the nose, with iodine, dark minerals, white pepper and ripe black plums. The tannins are dusty and open-grained on the full-bodied palate, but get dissipated in the lengthy finish. Already soft-grained and enjoyable. Drinkable now, but better in two years when it develops more savoriness and complexity.”
Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Saint-Pierre is one of the emblematic crus of the Médoc. This historic estate now belongs to Domaines Henri Martin. With its 17 hectares of vines, it is the smallest of the appellation’s crus classés, while enjoying a particularly renowned terroir. In 1982, Henri Martin, also owner of Château Gloria, acquired the property and patiently set about reconstituting the vineyard as it was at the time of the 1855 classification. Today, the estate is run by Françoise and Jean-Louis Triaud and their children, carrying on the Martin family legacy. The Château Saint-Pierre vineyard lies on a terroir of Günzian gravel over a clay-limestone base, typical of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of around fifty years, are planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wines of Château Saint-Pierre stand out for their elegant, harmonious style. They offer good concentration, supported by fine, silky tannins. On tasting, they reveal vibrant fruit with notes of spice and a subtle touch of oak. Structured and balanced, these wines have excellent ageing potential and perfectly illustrate the finesse and depth characteristic of the grands crus of Saint-Julien.
