Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The depth and complexity are wonderful, with blackberry, blueberry, dried flower, bark, violet and black olive aromas. Full-bodied with a deep palate of dark fruit and a hint of dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied but very tight, framed beautifully with firm and open-grained tannins that go on and on. Chewy and lightly salty at the end. 100% merlot. Needs time to soften. Best after 2029.”
Château Trotanoy occupies a sought-after part of the Pomerol plateau. Its name, derived from an old expression evoking how hard the land was to work, recalls the particularly demanding nature of its soils. The estate was acquired in 1953 by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. The vineyard covers 7.2 hectares. It combines gravel lying on deep black clay, above a ferruginous layer known as iron pan (crasse de fer). This succession of textures and depths gives the terroir a strongly distinctive character. Château Trotanoy delivers a dense, concentrated expression of Pomerol, characterised by a deep tannic architecture and great persistence. Its richness comes with a complexity that unfolds slowly in bottle, making patience essential to its appreciation.
