Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A rich, glossy Valandraud delivered in a plush but polished mode. Showing lots of new wood, cocoa nibs, mocha, espresso and pine cones to the dense blackberries and a touch of roasted red peppers. Full with immense concentration, this has compact fruit and bold, dusty tannins. You hardly catch the high alcohol here with such intensity. Balanced at a high pitch. Big, voluptuous but beautiful too. 36,200 bottles made. Give it three more years to let the wood spices integrate. Drink from 2028.”
Château Valandraud was founded in 1991 by Murielle Andraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin, on a 0.6-hectare plot in the Fongaban valley. In the early days, the wine was made in a garage converted into a cellar, marking the singular origins of the estate. Over the years, the vineyard has grown to approximately 10.7 hectares, on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. The grape varieties are mainly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and some Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard, then again on arrival at the cellar. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats, with manual punching down and pumping over, followed by a maceration of about three weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, then ageing continues for 18 to 30 months in new barrels, depending on the vintage. The final blend is decided after a rigorous selection of the lots, backed up by technical tastings. Virginie de Valandraud, created in 1992, is the estate’s second wine. Made from a specific selection, it has developed its own identity while maintaining the exacting standards and consistent quality associated with Château Valandraud.
