Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Lots of dark fruit with an edge, supported by chalky tannins. Compact and concentrated, with a fresh medium body. The crunchy, chalky tannins help balance the wine’s exuberance. This shows an attractive combination of power, focused tannins, freshness and exuberant fruit, with hints of black mushrooms and ink. Aged for 20 months in 90% new oak and 10% foudres. 84% merlot, 9% cabernet sauvignon and 7% cabernet franc.”
Château Valandraud was founded in 1991 by Murielle Andraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin, on a 0.6-hectare plot in the Fongaban valley. In the early days, the wine was made in a garage converted into a cellar, marking the singular origins of the estate. Over the years, the vineyard has grown to approximately 10.7 hectares, on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. The grape varieties are mainly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and some Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard, then again on arrival at the cellar. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats, with manual punching down and pumping over, followed by a maceration of about three weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, then ageing continues for 18 to 30 months in new barrels, depending on the vintage. The final blend is decided after a rigorous selection of the lots, backed up by technical tastings. Virginie de Valandraud, created in 1992, is the estate’s second wine. Made from a specific selection, it has developed its own identity while maintaining the exacting standards and consistent quality associated with Château Valandraud.
