Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Aromas of currants, blueberries and blackberries with a dark chocolate undertone. Perfumes and beautiful. Full body, with velvety tannins that are fine-tuned and tentative. It lasts for minutes. Gorgeous fruit and richness. Perhaps the greatest Les Fort ever? Try in 2018.”
Les Forts de Latour takes its name from a historic plot in the Enclos of Château Latour. The wine has been sold under this label since 1966 and holds a distinct place in the estate’s production. It is not defined simply by the age of the vines: its identity lies above all in the origin of the selected plots and in the decisions taken at blending. The grapes come from around the Enclos, from certain plots initially eligible for the Grand Vin and from vineyards outside this walled enclosure. These include Piñada, Petit Batailley and Sainte-Anne, as well as gravelly plots acquired more recently in the Artigues area. This mosaic of soils contributes to the diversity of profiles from year to year. Les Forts de Latour receives the same care in the vineyard and the same exacting standards in vinification as the Grand Vin. Ageing involves a proportion of new barrels, generally between 50 and 60%. The blend usually contains more Merlot than that of Château Latour, often around 25 to 30%, with variations specific to each vintage. The wine combines the characteristic structure of Pauillac with a more immediately welcoming texture. Cabernet Sauvignon brings depth and backbone, while Merlot contributes volume and suppleness.
