Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The light, fresh, sensual, round 2006 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux exhibits moderate levels of dark cherry and red currant fruit accompanied by background herb and spice characteristics. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.”
Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux is the estate’s historic second wine and the oldest second wine in the Médoc. Produced since the 17th century, it has borne its current name since the 1906 vintage. It is made with the same know-how and by the same teams as the Grand Vin, from vines whose age is, for the most part, comparable to that of the plots destined for Château Margaux. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically represents 75 to 80% of the blend, it is complemented by 15 to 20% Merlot as well as a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This composition brings finesse, structure, depth and complexity, while offering a more accessible expression of the Château Margaux style. The wine is aged for approximately twenty months, nearly 60% of it in new French oak barrels. This precise ageing highlights the wine’s elegance, the finesse of its tannins and the purity of its fruit, in a balance carried by a fine freshness. Pavillon Rouge thus combines the elegance and nobility of the Grand Vin with a more immediate approach, while remaining true to the exacting standards and precision that characterise Château Margaux.
