Vieux Château Certan 2012

Critics’ scores and tasting notes

Robert Parker Wine AdvocateRP 95

“Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Vieux Château Certan has a potent, smoke, cooked meat, Cabernet Franc-scented bouquet that is beautifully defined—quintessentially Pomerol. You want typicité? Come right here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite gentle as it sashays across the mouth. The acidity is very well judged and leads to an elegant tobacco tinged finish. Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont have produced one of the finest wines of the Right Bank in 2012, one that is up there with the greats. Tasted January 2016.”

The Estate

Among the emblematic estates of Pomerol, Vieux Château Certan holds a singular place. Founded in the 16th century and known by this name since 1745, the estate is one of the oldest known wine properties in the appellation. The history of the estate is closely linked to the Thienpont family. Georges Thienpont, a wine négociant based in Belgium, acquired Vieux Château Certan in 1924. Since the late 1950s, his heirs have guided the estate’s destiny with deep respect for its identity. Today, Alexandre Thienpont and his son Guillaume, the third and fourth generations of the family, continue this family adventure with the same rigour and the same passion. Their constant work aims to preserve the soul of the estate and express the unique style of its wines, renowned for their elegance and aromatic finesse. The Thienpont family’s philosophy is based on a simple conviction: wine should come into being naturally. In their view, the best wine is the one that undergoes the least intervention. Work in the cellar therefore consists of enhancing the natural expression of the grapes. Located in the heart of the Certan plateau, the vineyard covers 14 hectares divided into 23 distinct plots, each farmed independently according to its soil, grape variety and vine age. The grape varieties today are approximately 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of the estate embody a natural elegance and depth that captivate wine lovers and collectors around the world, brilliantly illustrating the nobility and longevity of great Pomerols.
