Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Complex aromas and flavors with so much perfume, showing dark cherries and raspberries with cedar and sandalwood character. Stony, salty undertones. Very refined tannins lead to a bright, vivid finish with dried mushrooms. Such class. A blend of 45% cabernet franc, 35% merlot and 20% cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable now but better in 2028.”
Stephan von Neipperg today manages Château Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as the family’s Bordeaux estates acquired since 1971. The particular nature of the soils at Château Canon La Gaffelière plays an essential role. These clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, which are very free-draining, are particularly receptive to heat. Because of the nature of the soils, the grape varieties also show an unusual make-up for a Right Bank cru, defined by a perfect balance between Merlot and Cabernet. On this terroir, where the grapes ripen early, the Cabernets flourish and bring aromatic complexity to the richness of the Merlots.
