Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Perfumed and clear, with aromas of raspberries, flowers and citrus. Medium-bodied, showing fine tannins and a tangy finish with salty undertones. A linear and complex wine with unique balance. 14.1% alcohol. 78% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon.”
Château Pavie Macquin owes its name to Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who was the original founder of the estate. Starting in 1887, several properties were brought together to form an estate of approximately 26 hectares. In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed manager, accompanied by Stéphane Derenoncourt, who had been present since 1990. The work carried out enabled the château to achieve Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 2006, a position confirmed in 2012. The vineyard is located on a commanding plateau, near the Mondot hill and on the edge of the Fongaban fault, at an altitude between 75 and 100 metres. The soils are clay-limestone, with variations depending on the depth of the rock. This structure brings power, minerality and freshness to the wines. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc in the limestone areas, as well as a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard management relies on viticulture that pays attention to the soil and natural balances. Vinification is carried out with whole berries, with gentle extraction, long maceration and ageing on fine lees. New plantings are made at high density, with a mass selection for the Cabernet Francs, planted on plots adapted to their expression.
