Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A brooding and deep wine just on the nose, with blackcurrants, redcurrants, spices such as cardamom and nutmeg, as well as black truffles with earth. Complex. Full-bodied with fine yet chewy tannins, that are wonderfully interwoven. Very structured and long. Needs five to six years to come around. 62% cabernet and 38% merlot. Try after 2028.”
The terroir of Cos d’Estournel enjoys a privileged geographical position, at the heart of a hilly area of the northern Médoc. The name Cos, meaning “hill of pebbles” in old Gascon, perfectly reflects this situation. The central part of the vineyard lies on a plateau of deep gravel, from which two slopes descend, one facing east and the other south, on soils of gravel and clay. The whole is also crossed by a vein of clay that runs across the estate in a long diagonal. Located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe, in the north of the Médoc, Cos d’Estournel enjoys a terroir that is exceptional for its diversity. The wines are its perfect expression, creating the unique style of this Second Cru Classé. Today, the 100 hectares of Cos d’Estournel form a mosaic of a multitude of plots. Two-thirds planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, they are complemented by Merlot and, in a small proportion, by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. With an average age of 45 years, the Cos d’Estournel vineyard includes some very old vines, many of them between 80 and 100 years old, which represent an unparalleled opportunity for the estate. These old vines bring depth and structure to the wine and reflect the complexity of the soil from which they draw their deepest elements. The gravity-fed winery thus allows the berries, then the juice, to be handled with the greatest gentleness, without excess, preserving the integrity of the fruit. Behind the opulent façade lies a place of remarkable modernity and restraint.
