Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Lynch Bages has another quite vivacious bouquet with lively black cherries, kirsch and wild mint aromas that do not hold back. I love the purity here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle grip in the mouth, and plenty of lightly spiced and surprisingly intense fruit on the bravura finish. The Cazes family oversaw a very sophisticated Lynch-Bages in this vintage that may well surpass many peoples' expectations. Tasted January 2016.”
Set on the Bages plateau in Pauillac, Château Lynch-Bages carries the memory of several generations of owners. After the era of the Lynch family, the estate went through the technical transformations of the 19th century before becoming part of the history of the Cazes family, who have guided its development since the 1930s. The vineyard lies on the Garonne gravel characteristic of Pauillac. These free-draining soils are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the backbone grape of the grand vin, complemented, depending on the year, by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The blend combines vigour, breadth and aromatic complexity. Lynch-Bages has preserved its old 19th-century gravity-fed vat room, a remarkable testament to early Bordeaux innovation. The estate inaugurated new winemaking facilities for the 2020 harvest, designed by the architect Chien Chung Pei and his team. Plot-by-plot work, sorting at harvest and temperature control allow precise selection before ageing in oak. The wine is recognisable by its density, its assertive tannic structure and its generous fruit, often accompanied by spicy nuances. Its deeply Pauillac character reveals itself gradually over time, without losing the energy that is its signature.
