Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Such pure and beautiful aromas of blackberries and black cherries with violets and red roses. So aromatic and enticing. Full-bodied with extremely integrated tannins that are velvety and curated. Fresh and sweet fruit at the end with an orange-peel undertone. Crushed stone and sandalwood, too. This is a very beautiful second wine of Ausone. 60% cabernet franc and 40% merlot. Drink after 2025.”
Chapelle d’Ausone first appeared with the 1995 vintage, continuing the history of Château Ausone, one of the emblematic estates of Saint-Émilion. This second wine is named after the ancient chapel within the estate, whose buildings and cellars bear witness to a heritage closely linked to the medieval town. It has its own identity while benefiting from the know-how of the Vauthier family and the Ausone teams. The vineyard of Château Ausone covers around seven hectares on the heights of Saint-Émilion. Its terraced plots enjoy east- and south-east-facing exposures. The starfish limestone (calcaire à astéries) of the plateau and the clay-limestone formations of the slopes make up a singular geological whole, in which the rock and the configuration of the slopes play a decisive role. Chapelle d’Ausone comes mainly from the estate’s youngest vines, notably from east-facing plots and from the upper part of the slopes. The wine is made with the same care as the grand vin. Selection and blending nevertheless preserve a distinct profile, in which Merlot generally plays a larger part alongside Cabernet Franc. Chapelle d’Ausone combines the precision and freshness of the estate’s limestone terroirs with a fruit-driven expression that is more immediately accessible.
