Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde, Château Léoville Las Cases stands out as one of the major historic estates of the Médoc, whose origins date back to the 17th century within the vast Domaine de Léoville. Following the French Revolution, this large estate was fragmented, giving rise in 1840 to Château Léoville Las Cases, which consists of the largest part of the former estate.
Since the late 19th century, the Delon family has ensured its continuity, perpetuating a heritage marked by unwavering high standards and the passing down of know-how from generation to generation.
The vineyard, now covering approximately 98 hectares, benefits from a privileged location, right on the banks of the Gironde and close to Château Latour.
Planted on deep gravel soils mixing pebbles, sand and clay, over a free-draining base, it offers ideal conditions for slow, even ripening of the grapes. The temperate oceanic influence, combined with the thermal regulation of the estuary, favours balanced growing cycles and the preservation of aromatic freshness.
The grape varieties, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, express themselves fully thanks to planting suited to the different soil types, made up of Garonne gravel and varied subsoils. This geological diversity allows a precise plot-by-plot reading of the vineyard and contributes to the complexity of the wine. The grapes reach optimal ripeness, faithfully reflecting the nuances of the terroir.
Over the vintages, the wines of Château Léoville Las Cases have distinguished themselves by their ability to combine power and finesse. Their dense structure, supported by tannins that are both present and controlled, is accompanied by an evolving aromatic expression marked by notes of fruit, then by more complex nuances of cedar, tobacco or graphite over time. This architecture gives them remarkable ageing potential, often extending over several decades.
Partly sourced from the famous Clos de Léoville, the Grand Vin embodies the precision and rigour of the estate, while Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, created more recently, offers a different interpretation, with a higher proportion of Merlot and an expression focused on the fruit’s freshness. All of this reflects the same philosophy: the constant pursuit of balance and precision, supported by a terroir of great complexity.
Through its history, its exceptional geographical position and the consistency of its quality, Château Léoville Las Cases ranks among the essential benchmarks of Bordeaux fine wine, consistently illustrating the depth and elegance characteristic of the grands crus of Saint-Julien.
