Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A tight and linear red with red currant, sweet tobacco and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, fine and creamy tannins. Bright finish. Extremely fine texture for the second wine of Lafite. Typical character of Carruades. A blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot, 9% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.”
Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, produced from specific plots located mainly on the plateau of Carruades, in the immediate vicinity of the grand vin.
Historically vinified separately, this terroir of deep gravel gradually contributed to the blend of the grand vin before regaining its own identity through Carruades de Lafite, now fully recognised. Made to the same exacting standards as the Grand Vin, it benefits from traditional vinification in wooden, concrete and stainless steel vats, with extraction adapted to each lot. It is then aged in French oak barrels for about 16 months. The blend gives a larger share to Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and occasionally Cabernet Franc, giving the wine a different expression, more accessible in its youth while remaining true to the Pauillac style. Carruades de Lafite thus stands out for its balance between structure and suppleness, offering a more immediate reading of the Lafite terroir while retaining the precision and elegance characteristic of the estate.
