Critics’ scores and tasting notes

“A dense wine, showing good concentration, structure and balance. Medium- to full-bodied, with tight but precise tannins and plenty of fresh dark berries. A touch of graphite, tobacco ash and dark chocolate too. Very well done. 71.5% cabernet sauvignon, 1.5% cabernet franc and 27% merlot. Drinkable now but better from 2027.”

The Estate

The estate dates back to the early 19th century and John-Lewis Brown, a passionate Scot who carefully chose the best terroirs of Cantenac. His legacy can still be seen today in the distinctive architecture of the château, built in a Tudor style inspired by the English Renaissance, a unique silhouette in the Médoc landscape. In December 2019, the Le Lous family took over the estate and opened a new chapter in its history. This takeover was accompanied by significant investment aimed at enhancing the quality of the wines while developing a modern and responsible approach to viticulture. The Château Cantenac Brown vineyard extends over the prestigious gravel plateaux of Margaux and Cantenac. The vines cover around 48 hectares and are surrounded by a natural park of nearly twenty hectares, a true refuge for wildlife and plants. The grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Driven by the search for balance between nature, culture and the expression of the terroir, the family has undertaken an ambitious transformation of the château. This took shape with the construction of a new gravity-fed vat room, inaugurated for the 2023 harvest. This innovative winery, built of raw earth and untreated wood, allows precise plot-by-plot vinification in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit and achieve the greatest precision in the blends. The wines of Château Cantenac Brown stand out for their fine tannins, elegant texture and great aromatic intensity. The notes of ripe fruit are often accompanied by spicy touches, while the palate is dense, harmonious and precise.
