Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Quite a scented and layered nose of spiced berries, pencil shavings, white pepper and creme de cassis. Quite refined and pretty, with a medium to full body and firm, polished tannins. Poised, juicy and long. One of the best Camensacs I have tasted, and it’s a great value for this excellent vintage. Drink from 2027.”
Located in Saint-Laurent-Médoc, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc appellation, Château de Camensac is one of the crus classés of the 1855 classification. The reputation of the cru was consolidated in the 19th century, when the official classification of the wines of the Médoc and Graves was drawn up in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle in Paris, held under Napoleon III. Château de Camensac was ranked Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, confirming the quality of its terroir and its wines. In 2005, Jean Merlaut and Céline Villars-Foubet acquired the estate with the ambition of restoring its full visibility and standing. Camensac thus joined the group of estates associated with the Merlaut family, renowned for its commitment to several leading Médoc crus. The Camensac vineyard covers approximately 75 hectares planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in proportions that vary from vintage to vintage. Château de Camensac has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 since 2021 and is pursuing an agroecological programme aimed at strengthening biodiversity and soil vitality. The wines of Château de Camensac stand out for their balance between intensity and elegance. The colour is deep, while the bouquet develops notes of spices, flowers and ripe fruit. On the palate, the texture is harmonious, supported by a fine tannic structure. Thanks to this balance, the wines are approachable after a few years of ageing while offering remarkable potential for development over several decades.
