The history of Fieuzal spans more than four centuries of winegrowing. First farmed by modest winegrowers, the estate took the name of the Fieuzal family in 1864, passed on by its last descendant, nicknamed “Lovely Fieuzal”. Its 1893 vintage was among the wines served at the table of Pope Leo XIII. In 1959, the red wine was admitted to the Graves classification. Five families have succeeded one another at the head of the estate, each helping to shape its history. The vineyard lies on a mosaic of gravel and sand characteristic of the Graves. The minerals in these soils nourish the singularity of the terroir, while their ability to retain freshness supports the development of the vines. Around the plots, 30 hectares of forest and extensive hedgerows add to the diversity of the landscape. The estate farms 74 separate plots, planted with six grape varieties. This diversity makes it possible to approach each sector according to its particular features, before the vineyard’s different expressions are brought together in the blends. The grapes are harvested by hand. In the underground cellar, more than 800 French oak and acacia barrels house the wines as they mature. Ageing continues plot by plot for about twelve months. For the red Fieuzal, ageing lasts on average twelve months in French oak barrels. The identity of the red Fieuzal lies in the meeting of several grape varieties and the diversity of its plots. The wine shows an elegant, expressive and dynamic personality, whose complexity never masks its balance. A signature that keeps its character as it evolves and conveys, in the glass, the diversity of this vineyard.
