Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A refined texture, with red currants, cherries and bark on a medium body with fine and caressing tannins and a long, bright finish. Firm and crunchy at the end. A blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.”
Château Ferrière has been part of the history of the grands crus of Margaux since the end of the 17th century, when the Ferrière family acquired the best vineyard land in the village and gave the estate its name. Classified Troisième Grand Cru in 1855, it now belongs to the Merlaut family, in a strong tradition of family continuity. After the death of Bernadette Merlaut, her daughter Claire took over the management of the estate. She led the estate through a major shift towards environmentally friendly practices, leading to organic and then biodynamic certification. The vineyard, in the heart of the Margaux appellation, covers approximately 24 hectares of deep gravel over limestone marl. Some of the vines, planted as early as the 1950s, stand out for their deep roots and distinctive identity. The grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Vinification is carried out plot by plot, with natural yeasts and controlled extraction, respecting the raw material. Certified organic since 2015 and biodynamic since 2018, Château Ferrière is one of the few Grands Crus Classés committed to this holistic approach, in the vineyard and in the cellar alike. The wines are characterised by their purity, freshness and balance, expressing the identity of the terroir with precision.
