Critics’ scores and tasting notes

“The very black, almost tarry nose leads you into an unusually structured and compact 2013. The generous tannins are surprisingly harmonious and this gives the wine quite a presence on the bold palate. For this vintage it’s quite a statement. Drink or hold. Château Quintus vertical tasting. SP.”

The Estate

Located in the west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, a direct neighbour of Château Cheval Blanc and on the border of Pomerol, Château Figeac occupies a singular place in the landscape of Bordeaux’s fine wines. With nearly 40 hectares of vines, it is one of the largest estates in the appellation. Owned by the Manoncourt family since 1892, the château embodies a family-oriented and sustainable vision of Bordeaux wine. Under the leadership of Thierry Manoncourt, an agricultural engineer, the estate embarked on an ambitious modernisation of its vineyard in the mid-20th century. This drive for high standards and innovation continues today under the leadership of Marie-France and Hortense Idoine Manoncourt, with Jean-Valmy Nicolas as co-manager and Frédéric Faye as managing director. In 2021, the inauguration of a new gravity-fed winery, designed for plot-by-plot vinification of extreme precision, marked a major milestone in the estate’s pursuit of quality. Château Figeac lies on three large gravel ridges made up of deep gravel mixed with quartz and flint, over a clay-silt subsoil. This geological configuration, rare in Saint-Émilion, gives the estate a distinct identity within the appellation. Its grape varieties are also unusual: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are planted in balanced proportions. This atypical mix shapes a style recognisable among all others, combining structure, freshness and elegance. The wines of Château Figeac seduce with their balance and aromatic depth. They reveal notes of black fruit and blackcurrant, supported by spicy nuances and a subtle mineral backbone. The tannins, precise and silky, carry a natural freshness that ensures remarkable ageing potential. The result of constant high standards and continuous technical progress, Château Figeac has achieved the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion, confirming its status among the leading references of Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
