Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2023 Gruaud Larose has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of cassis, dark berries, burning embers, petroleum jelly and violets. Medium- to full-bodied, it's suave and polished, with sweet tannins, ripe acids and a seamless, charming profile. Checking in at a modest 12.6% alcohol, this blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot and 3.5% Cabernet Franc is the result of an extended block-by-block harvest that began on September 11 and only concluded on October 3.”
Château Gruaud Larose is one of the great historic estates of the Médoc. The estate was passed down through the generations and is now run by the Merlaut family. Classified Deuxième Grand Cru in 1855, it has established itself as a benchmark of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vineyard covers approximately 82 hectares in a single block of deep Quaternary gravel over a clay-limestone subsoil. This configuration, combined with a favourable climate, ensures good soil drainage and even ripening of the grapes. The grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines, planted at high density, contribute to the quality and concentration of the grapes. The estate is committed to an environmental approach, with conversion to organic farming and the adoption of biodynamically inspired practices aimed at preserving the natural balance of the vineyard. The wines of Château Gruaud Larose stand out for their structure, balance and aromatic complexity, reflecting the expression of the terroir and offering recognised ageing potential.
