Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A classic Pauillac nose, showing ripe currants, graphite, pencil shavings and cocoa powder. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless coating of fine, dusty tannins. The wine is broad, dissolved and long, with good drive. Approachable now thanks to its balance and complexity but will be much better after 2027.”
This cru owes its name to the Libéral family, brokers who owned the estate in the 18th century, and to its location: half of its 30 ha of vines (in conversion to organic farming) lie on the Bages plateau, behind Pichon-Baron, while the other part adjoins Ch. Latour. Acquired (and replanted) by the Cruse family in 1960, the Domaine passed in 1983 to the Merlaut-Villars family, who restored its full lustre, notably under the leadership of Claire Villars-Lurton, at the helm since 1999 and also owner of Ch. Ferrière (Cru Classé de Margaux).
