Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Complex and expressive nose, offering red and dark fruit, spices and pepper with wood and mushroom undertones. Fresh mussel shell and a hint of ink, too. Full-bodied with a fine texture and great balance between the acidity and the controlled, tannic structure. Very long finish. Goes on and on. Tiny production, 21 hectoliters per hectare. Try after 2025.”
Created in 1630 by a Parisian financier, Firmin Le Bailly, this cru at the gates of Bordeaux rose to fame in the 19th century under the impetus of Alcide Bellot des Minières. Its prestige was strengthened from 1955 by the Sanders family, then by the American banker Robert G. Wilmers. His son Chris Wilmers took over the governance in 2017, still with Véronique Sanders at the helm. The vineyard, devoted entirely to red varieties, covers 30 ha in a single block. A new winery, designed by Daniel Romeo, was completed in 2021.
