Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“This has incredible power and drive with blackberry, black olive and graphite. It’s full-bodied, yet dynamic and agile, with so much polished and muscular tannin. Yet, it remains in harmony and balance. So much character. The head of the chateau calls it diabolical beauty. 25% less production than the 2019. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.”
Created in 1630 by a Parisian financier, Firmin Le Bailly, this cru at the gates of Bordeaux rose to fame in the 19th century under the impetus of Alcide Bellot des Minières. Its prestige was strengthened from 1955 by the Sanders family, then by the American banker Robert G. Wilmers. His son Chris Wilmers took over the governance in 2017, still with Véronique Sanders at the helm. The vineyard, devoted entirely to red varieties, covers 30 ha in a single block. A new winery, designed by Daniel Romeo, was completed in 2021.
