Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A chiseled, medium- to full-bodied wine combining texture and fruit, with acidity that brings cohesion and depth complemented by good concentration.”
Château Latour-Martillac takes its name from the tower that overlooks the main courtyard of the estate. The stones of this fortification would later be used to build the present château at the end of the 18th century. In 1930, Alfred Kressmann, Edouard’s son, became the owner of the estate. He then undertook a thorough restructuring of the vineyard. Without changing the oldest plots, he gradually introduced Cabernet Sauvignon alongside the Merlot already planted. After the Second World War, Jean Kressmann continued this transformation. Passionate about winemaking, he developed the vineyard and acquired a neighbouring gravel plateau, which gradually enabled him to expand the estate to nearly thirty hectares. The Château Latour-Martillac vineyard lies on two distinct groups of terroirs. These soils favour the expression of Merlot as well as the white varieties, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. For the red wines, the grapes are also picked by hand. The Merlot is harvested first, followed by the Petit Verdot and then the Cabernet Sauvignon. Each plot is worked separately in order to preserve the identity of each terroir. Ageing usually lasts between sixteen and eighteen months in French oak barrels. Thanks to the diversity of its soils and the attention given to each plot, Château Latour-Martillac is now established as one of the key signatures of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, renowned for the finesse of its whites and the elegance of its reds.
