Critics’ scores and tasting notes

James Sucklingjamessuckling.comJS 97-98

“The aromas of blackberries, black olives and hints of tobacco and dried fruit are fascinating and enticing. It’s medium- to full-bodied with creamy and polished tannins and a savory finish. Turns refined and focused after the layered fruit. Classic in character, with a caressing texture and balance. Hints of ripe fruit and freshness at the same time. 86% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 1% cabernet sauvignon.”

The Estate

Château L’Évangile traces its origins to the Légise family, based in Libourne, who took part in the development of the Pomerol vineyard from the 18th century. The estate appears in the registers of the mid-18th century under a different name before gradually adopting the name L’Évangile at the beginning of the 19th century. During the 19th century, the property took shape and established itself as a benchmark of the appellation. It then passed to the Ducasse family, who ensured its continuity for more than a century. In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired the estate to secure its future and embark on a new phase of development. Since 2020, management of the estate has been entrusted to Juliette Couderc. The vineyard is located in the south-east of the Pomerol plateau, in the immediate vicinity of major estates of the appellation. It covers around 22 hectares divided into several identified plots, organised according to their location and nature. The soils show marked diversity, combining clay on the higher ground, gravel mixed with clay and sandier areas lower down. This variety forms an essential foundation for the expression of the wine. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The plots are grassed and part of an approach that promotes biodiversity, with hedges and beehives on the estate. Vineyard management incorporates organic farming practices and experiments aimed at adapting the vines to climatic constraints. Technical adjustments are made according to the sensitivity of each plot. Château L’Évangile thus follows an approach combining historical continuity, plot-by-plot precision and the gradual adaptation of the vineyard, while respecting its environment and its identity.
