Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The depth of fruit comes through clearly, with a medium body and plenty of berry, chocolate, walnut and bark aromas. Creamy and polished, with a lovely texture and a long and rather endless finish. Soft and precise. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% petit verdot.”
Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Domaine de Chevalier is one of the great historic benchmarks of the Graves. This estate, whose origins date back several centuries, is today recognised for the consistency and elegance of both its red and white wines. A decisive turning point came in 1983 when the Bernard family, already active in the spirits trade, acquired the estate. From that date, a vast programme of modernisation and restructuring was undertaken. Today, the estate covers nearly one hundred hectares, of which about seventy are planted with vines. The plots are divided between a majority of red varieties and a smaller area dedicated to white wines. For the white wines, Sauvignon Blanc accounts for the majority of plantings, complemented by Sémillon. This combination produces wines that combine aromatic freshness, depth and ageing potential. The red wines are based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. This blend provides balance, complexity and structure. The wines of Domaine de Chevalier stand out for their precision and elegance. The reds develop a refined structure, supported by fine tannins and great aromatic depth. The whites, considered among the most remarkable in the appellation, offer a rare combination of freshness, richness and complexity.
