Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The remarkable 2021 Montrose gets my nomination for the title of "wine of the vintage" in the Médoc. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis and dark berries mingled with subtle hints of mint, orange, pencil shavings and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered and multidimensional core of fruit underpinned by beautifully ripe, refined tannins. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it entirely transcends the limitations of the year. This young classic, reminiscent of the estate's 1996 but far better, is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.”
Owned by Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006, this 1855 Second Cru Classé consistently embodies the high standards and distinction that characterise the great estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Then as now, Montrose stands out for the quality of its wines, their assertive style and their international reputation. The vineyard covers 95 hectares in a single block, a rare configuration in the Médoc. Located right beside the Gironde estuary, it lies on terraces of gravel mixed with sand on the surface, while the subsoil consists of deep clay. This exceptional terroir, often described as a true “elite core”, gives the vines ideal conditions for producing great Saint-Estèphe wines, at once powerful, precise and able to age for decades. Throughout its history, the spirit of Château Montrose has remained deeply marked by the quest for excellence. Each generation of owners and technical managers has helped strengthen the reputation of the estate. This transmission of know-how, combined with a precise understanding of the terroir, enables the château to produce wines of great complexity and remarkable consistency, even in the most challenging vintages.
