Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2018 Pape Clement is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques, 60% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls out of the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black cherries, stewed black plums and black raspberries, followed by suggestions of violets, star anise, cardamom and camphor with a waft of iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers exhilarating energy, offering crunchy black berry and exotic spice layers with a solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and mineral tinged. Still very primary, it will need a good 5 years in bottle to deliver that next-level experience and will drink over the next 30+ years.”
Located at the gates of Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément is one of the historic estates of the Bordeaux vineyards. The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux, developed vine growing there before becoming Pope under the name of Clement V. The estate takes its name from him and has perpetuated a recognised winegrowing tradition for several centuries. Today run by Bernard Magrez, owner since the 1980s, the château is one of the leading names of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Under his leadership, the estate has benefited from significant investment and extensive work in the vineyard to fully express the potential of this historic terroir. The vineyard lies on clayey gravel soils of Pyrenean origin, particularly favourable to the production of fine wines. The plots are farmed with constant attention and the grapes are harvested by hand in order to select the finest fruit. Vinification favours precision and respect for the fruit. After a long maceration and carefully controlled fermentation, the wine is aged for about eighteen months in French oak barrels, which gives it structure and complexity. Blended mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, Château Pape Clément red stands out for its aromatic intensity and depth. The bouquet reveals notes of ripe fruit, spice and floral nuances. On the palate, the wine is ample and elegant, supported by fine structure and a lingering finish. Château Pape Clément embodies the alliance of a prestigious terroir, centuries of history and a constant pursuit of excellence.
