Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“The 2021 Troplong Mondot unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and plums mingled with violets, exotic spices and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, the wine is layered and complex, with all the depth and authority that one expects from this clay-driven terroir, its concentrated core of fruit underpinned by sweet tannins and lively animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. A blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc with a remarkably low pH of 3.35, it's the first vintage produced in the estate's state-of-the-art new winery.”
Located at the highest point of the Saint-Émilion appellation, Château Troplong Mondot occupies a unique position, overlooking the village from its hill. The contours of the vineyard are much the same as when it was created in 1700, testifying to a remarkable continuity of the estate over more than three centuries of history. A Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, the estate pursues a policy of continuous improvement, with a clear ambition: to preserve the identity of the place and to seek ever greater precision in the wines. The vineyard occupies the hill of Troplong Mondot, whose highest point reaches 110 metres. The estate’s grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This dominant position and the diversity of the plots contribute to the unique identity of the estate. The terroir combines several types of soil. Some plots lie on clay-limestone soils, with fossil-rich limestone and old quarries beneath the vineyard. Others are marked by Agenais molasse, made up of clay soils in which flint is also found. This diversity is one of the characteristic features of Troplong Mondot. Work in the vineyard is carried out with close attention to the environment. Twelve horses plough 80% of the vineyard. The estate has used neither insecticides nor herbicides for twenty years and is developing dry stone walls and hedgerows to encourage biodiversity. After the harvest, which takes place in September, the grapes are optically sorted. Fermentation takes place in vats, then ageing continues in barrels. The blends are then crafted in search of the balance between power, elegance, complexity and precision that guides the estate. The wines of Troplong Mondot stand out for the balance between the natural power of the terroir and a constant search for freshness. Merlot brings a dense texture and intense aromas; the limestone contributes energy, elegance and tension. This combination produces radiant, precise wines deeply linked to their origin. Freshness and aromatic precision balance the power, creating a unique identity among the fine wines of Saint-Émilion.
