Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Fresh and floral, showing lilac, mint and light stone aromas that follow through to a medium body with really fine, broad tannins that fan out on the palate. Creamy and textural with lovely fruit and purity. Extremely long and poised. First year made in a new cellar. A blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 9% cabernet franc. Very drinkable now but needs three to four years of bottle aging to come together.”
Clos du Marquis is a wine from Domaines Delon, which also own Château Léoville Las Cases. Its origins date back to the early 20th century, when the first vintage was produced in 1902. The name of the wine refers to the Petit Clos that once surrounded the residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. From its inception, the goal was to highlight remarkable plots located on the great terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation. Contrary to what is sometimes imagined, these vines do not come from the historic enclosure of Léoville Las Cases but from particularly prestigious neighbouring terroirs, surrounded by renowned crus of Saint-Julien and Pauillac. This location gives Clos du Marquis its own identity, true to the elegance and structure characteristic of the great wines of the Médoc. The Clos du Marquis vineyard covers approximately 45 hectares in the commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. The grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. Clos du Marquis fully reflects the style of the Saint-Julien appellation. The wines stand out for their precise structure, aromatic depth and natural balance.
