Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“A very structured red with a medium body, good depth of fruit and juicy tannins. Earth, spice and terra cotta undertones to the fruit. Muscular in many ways.”
Having taken the helm of Château Chasse-Spleen in 2000, Céline Villars belongs to a family line deeply rooted in the Bordeaux vineyards. With her husband Jean-Pierre Foubet, she forms a complementary duo at the head of the property: while he oversees management and communication, she embodies a vision devoted to the world of wine, its landscapes and its identity. The estate has grown over time, notably with the addition of the Château Brillette vineyard. This now brings together all the gravel ridges characteristic of the Moulis appellation, offering a particularly representative diversity of terroirs. The vineyard lies mainly on gravel soils, together with sandy-gravel areas and clay-limestone subsoils. This natural balance ensures good drainage and even ripening of the grapes. Today, Château Chasse-Spleen covers a large area, most of it planted for red wines. The grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The vines, with an average age of 40 years, are planted at high density, contributing to the quality and concentration of the grapes. The wines are aged for around 16 months in barrels, a proportion of them new. This approach preserves the balance of the wine while supporting its structure. The wines of Château Chasse-Spleen express the diversity of their terroirs, marked by balance, precision and classic Médoc typicity.
